Burford is small and most of it is old, but the everyday housing is there if you know where to look: the 1960s and 70s closes off Barns Lane and Tanners Lane at the top of the town, the houses along Shilton Road, and the family homes in Fulbrook across the river and Carterton a few miles on. Brick and hard plaster mostly, with dot-and-dab plasterboard in the newer ones, which changes the fixing for anything heavy. Families come for Burford School and stay for the valley, so alongside the weekenders there’s a steady turnover of house moves, and a lot of our work follows one. Rubble stone from the Taynton quarries a mile up the road, lime plaster, oak studs, wattle and daub, floors that slope and walls that lean: we work out what’s behind the surface before drilling, use reversible fixings on soft plaster and old timber, and fit picture hanging systems where listed building consent rules out new holes.
The villages follow the Windrush. Fulbrook, Swinbrook, Asthall and Widford upstream, Taynton and the Barringtons downstream, Shilton, Westwell and Filkins to the south: stone cottages under stone slate, converted barns and mill houses, old rectories and manor farmhouses, a large share of them weekend homes and holiday lets, and substantial modern houses set back behind stone walls with double-height hallways and galleried landings that call for large pieces and heavy mirrors.
