National Trust Avebury

Case Study

In April 2026, Hang It Services partnered with the National Trust at Avebury to install a high-specification, full-room gallery rail system.

Our team integrated a discreet, heavy-duty hanging solution across four gallery walls, combining modern engineering with architectural respect for this historic Wiltshire property.

At Hang It Services, we thrive on projects where precision engineering meets architectural heritage. In April 2026, we were commissioned by the National Trust property, Avebury, to design and install a high-specification gallery hanging system.

The requirement was clear: the property needed a versatile, robust, and visually discreet system capable of supporting a fluid rotation of exhibitions. For our team, this represented a perfect opportunity to demonstrate how modern technical solutions can be integrated into a historic environment with absolute respect for the existing structure.

The Challenge: Balancing Versatility with Heritage

A gallery is a living space. Unlike a residential installation where a piece might stay in place for years, a public gallery requires a system that can be reconfigured frequently without damaging the walls.
The 13m x 6m gallery at Avebury presented several technical considerations:
Varied Wall Architecture: The installation spanned four distinct walls, each requiring a bespoke assessment of structural integrity to ensure safe weight-bearing for heavy framed works.
Aesthetic Continuity: In a historic setting, the hardware must be functional but almost invisible. The goal was to provide a “white-glove” finish that complemented the architectural lines of the room.
Future-Proofing: The system needed to accommodate various hanging methods—both rods for heavy-duty security and cables for a more minimalist look—depending on the specific needs of future exhibits.

Our Solution: A Tailored Engineering Approach

Following a detailed site survey and consultation, Hang It Services mapped out a comprehensive installation plan. We opted for a high-capacity, ceiling rail system that follows the exact perimeter of the gallery.

Ruler

Precision Mapping

Using laser-level technology, our technicians mapped the ceiling-to-wall joins to ensure the rails were millimetre-perfect. In a room of this scale, even a minor deviation can be magnified across a 13-metre run. By ensuring a flawless horizontal alignment, we provided the gallery with a reliable “zero-point” for all future curation.

Gear

Specialist Fixing & Structural Integrity

Historic walls often vary in composition. Our team utilised specialist structural fixings engineered to distribute weight-load evenly across the rail. This ensures that even the most substantial 3D pieces or heavily glazed frames can be hung with total peace of mind regarding the safety of the collection and the building itself.

Minimalist Integration

We selected a refined white-finish rail that blends seamlessly with the gallery’s interior. This allows the focus to remain entirely on the artwork. The system was installed with a dust-free protocol, ensuring that the gallery environment remained pristine throughout the process.

The Results: Ready for Exhibition

The project was completed on schedule, allowing the gallery team at Avebury to begin preparations for their upcoming Spring exhibition.

The new installation offers the property a professional-grade foundation for years to come. By removing the need for traditional hooks and nails, we have effectively protected the wall surfaces from future damage while giving the curators the freedom to experiment with heights and groupings without restriction.
