Gerrards Cross grew up around its station. The Marylebone line arrived in 1906 and the town filled in behind it: 1920s and 1930s detached family homes along Marsham Way, Fulmer Way and the Dukes Wood estate, post-war houses on Layters Way and Bulstrode Way, and the flats along Packhorse Road and Bull Lane that suit downsizers and first-time buyers. North of the Common along Camp Road, Mill Lane and the top of Dukes Wood Avenue, the plots are large and a lot of the original houses have been replaced in the last twenty years by substantial new builds: double-height hallways, galleried landings, oversized walls that need oversized pieces and two-person lifts.
