Amersham is really two towns. Amersham-on-the-Hill (HP6) grew up around the Metropolitan line station after 1892, and most of its housing is classic Metro-land: 1920s and 1930s semis and detached houses along Chiltern Avenue, Rectory Hill, Hill Avenue and the roads off Sycamore Road. Solid brick walls with hard plaster at the front, often a plasterboard extension at the back. This is family-home territory and London commuter country, so a lot of our work here follows a house move. We hang gallery walls up stairwells, single pieces over mantels and full residential rollouts. A single piece in one room is just as welcome as a whole-house install.
Old Amersham (HP7) is the original market town in the Misbourne valley. The High Street and Broadway are lined with timber-framed and Georgian-fronted buildings, from the 1682 Market Hall to the old coaching inns and the cottages along Church Street and Whielden Street. Almost all of it is listed and inside the conservation area, which means wattle and daub, lath and plaster, oak studs and walls that are rarely square. We locate the timbers before we drill, use reversible fixings wherever we can, and fit picture hanging systems where listed building consent rules out new holes.
North of the Hill, Chesham Bois is a different scale again: large Edwardian and Arts and Crafts houses on wooded plots along Bois Lane, North Road and Copperkins Lane, with double-height hallways and galleried landings that suit big pieces and heavy mirrors. Highover Park has one of the country’s earliest modernist houses in High Over, a Grade II* listed 1929 concrete house, so wall types across the area vary more than most. We’ll always confirm the wall before drilling, whatever the property.

We carry fixings for both and check each wall before drilling, so a heavy piece in a rear extension goes up as securely as one on the original front wall.
