St John’s Wood is unusual in central London because of its detached and semi-detached villa stock. Hamilton Terrace, Avenue Road, Wellington Road, Marlborough Place and Carlton Hill have some of the largest detached period homes in inner London, often with very high ceilings, ornate plaster mouldings and tall sash windows that need careful eye-line decisions. Mansion blocks through the south of NW8 toward Lord’s and the Regent’s Park border tend to be Edwardian red brick with solid masonry behind the plaster skim, which holds fixings well once you’re past the soft outer layer. Modern apartment buildings along Avenue Road are mostly metal-stud plasterboard, which needs Gripit or Toggler fixings rated to the weight for anything above 5kg. We arrive with the right kit for all three substrates, and we’ll always confirm the wall type before any drilling starts.
